I’m a big fan of Rydal Water in the South Lake District, it is in fact the first place I saw photographed by a fellow Landscape Photographer when I was about 12 that really captured my imagination. I recall being in complete admiration of the photographs I was looking at and wondering how I could take photos like that here in the Lake District.
While the photos I originally saw that captured my imagination were taken in winter, Autumn is a great time of year to visit Rydal. Especially in the late afternoon as the light is getting better by the minute. Here’s what I captured on a little way to Loughrigg Terrace from Pelter Bridge along Rydal.

Wordsworth Boathouse over Rydal.

Playing around with composition I find this panoramic shot most appealing.

A taller crop allows for more of the Autumn foliage to be included in the frame.

Nab Scar over Rydal.

Rising up to Loughrigg Terrace the view opens out above Bannerigg Woods.

Helm Crag over Baneriggs Wood.

Late afternoon shoots in the Lake District are always compromised when you are surrounded by high fells. You loose part of the beautiful warming light on the scene due to large shadows.

Autumn in the Lake District.

Looking back towards Rydal Water.

Back at the Boathouse.

With the Light gone the scene looks a little flatter than earlier.

Various adjustments to this scene reveals quite different looks.
