Skelwith Sunset with a Surprise

I was sat having my supper totally oblivious to the time and conditions outside. Last time I looked it was flat and grey and I’d already resigned myself to staying in.

Then the next time I looked up Loughrigg was alight with the amazing golden light I adore. Light like this can last seconds or minutes so I rushed to grab my camera and capture what I could from the front door.

I must have taken this image a thousand times from all different types of weather but there is something inside me that is just drawn to photograph scenes like this. The evening light like this I find so pleasing.

I made these shots and within less than five minutes the light had gone as the sun dipped below the Langdale Fells to the West.

I decided to have a short walk down to the Bench to see how the day was concluded. Would there be a dramatic sunset like I’ve witnessed here so many times.

On the short walk through the woods I noticed a larger than usual bird immediately in front of me in the trees.

As I stopped to look it flew off, it was immediately obvious it was an owl. I tracked it’s flight to a tree in the distance and approached to take some shots. Luckily I had a 100-400mm zoom lens on my camera from the shots over a Loughrigg just moments ago.

He’s looking.

Using the 400mm Image Stabalised lens and the 50 million pixel Canon 5DSR Im able to get some really detailed shots. All handheld too.

Peekaboo.

I’ve not really spent much time photographing wildlife in the Lake District but I really enjoyed these few moments.

Looking at these images later that evening I suspect this is a young Tauney Owl as there are what appears to be baby feathers around its head.

I bet this is one of the two owls Lewis and I tracked down a few weeks ago in this exact spot in the dark.

We had our head torches on and followed their twit-toowing until we were directly below them. Shining our head torches up their eyes light up and we had found them. Two tiny owls perched on a branch side by side. Perhaps this one tonight is one of those two we saw some weeks back.

Anyway how’s the sunset….

Continuing on to the bench it looked obvious that there would be no spectacular sunset tonight just the last embers of light glowing in the distance over the Langdale fells.

It’s always a treat to see animals in the wild. I’ve been lucky enough to see owls, squirrels and Deers this year which is a lot when your not used to seeing anything other than the neighbours cat digging up your flowerbeds or the odd garden bird.

Bog Lane.

One of my favourite Branches around here. No seriously.
