This year I am determined to do more walks in the Lake District with my two boys Thomas and Lewis. Today is our first walk of the year and I decided to go for a short walk that can be cut short after a little while if energy levels dictated. Starting at Loughrigg Tarn the plan was that we would walk to Grasmere.
The walk to Loughrigg Tarn is a very short and along a decent level path. If the weather is kind you get nice views over Loughrigg Tarn towards the Langdale Pikes. The path goes along the Tarn and out onto Red Bank where a slight incline leads you up through Deerbolts Woods and out onto Loughrigg Terrace with great elevated views over Grasmere.
Here’s how we got on.

Heading up towards the Tarn from the roadside parking. Loughrigg Fell in the distance.

Spring is springing all around. About time too.

The start of the path to Loughrigg Tarn.

A bit of a dull looking day, hopefully things will clear out.

A bit dull over towards the Langdale Pikes as seen from the path. It’s great to be out though.

Down at the waters edge, the Tarn looks very still here.

Reflections over Loughrigg Tarn.

The Langdale Pikes just visible through the cloud.

Where the trees meet the water.

Submerged Branches.

An old tree stump in the Tarn.

Moving on past the Tarn now, I decided to go for the road and see how things were, if I needed to turn back I could head back down the road seen over the Tarn back to the car.

An old interesting Barn above the Tarn.

Looks like the Langdale Pikes are clearing out a little.

Herdwicks scratching themselves on the fence.

After a short walk up the slight incline that is Red Bank we reach the entrance to Deerbolts Woods.

After a couple of minutes along the path the tress open up to reveal this elevated view over Grasmere.

Grasmere as seen from Loughrigg Terrace.

A wider view showing the path know as Loughrigg Terrace with the view below over Grasmere. Beautiful and now much clearer. looks like some blue sky is on the horizon over Rydal.

Me and my two Boys Lewis 6 and Thomas 10. As we stood to take this shot the sun came out for the first time today.

Again a wider scene with some sun to add a little colour. A nice place to stop for lunch as there are a couple of wooden benches along the path.

A beautiful day down towards Rydal. You can follow the Path you see here all the way down to Rydal Water.
Lewis carrying lunch and coats as we head back.

The scene from above Loughrigg Tarn towards the Langdale Pikes looking a little different now.
Thomas’ turn to carry the bag and coats. Lewis cooling off after his half of the return journey.
A classic view over Loughrigg Tarn with the beautiful Langdale Pikes in the background.

A couple stand admiring the view.

Looking back along the path to Loughrigg which looks a little different from earlier.

A great first walk of 2016 and hopefully one of many we shall enjoy this year. I’m hoping to continue to build my straight and stamina to sustain walks like this which will in time allow me to visit more and more beautiful locations in the Lake District. I’m finding that going with the kids is a great way of keeping the pace slow and that suits me at the moment. It’s also great to be out again with my children in this environment and they seem to benefit from that time too.
