Tilberthwaite Quarry

Tilberthwaite used to be a major part of discussions in of all subjects Religious Education at my Secondary School in Kendal. The teacher who took this class was also the outdoor education officer and frequently took groups of kids to Tilberthwaite on camping trips. I don’t remember much about the religious education he talked about but I remember his passion for Tilberthwaite. Having not been there I could only imagine what it was like. 20 years later I finally paid a visit to the area.

With energy in very short supply I had absolutely no chance of exploring the true potential of this quite remote and industrial part of the Lake District. From the car park a steep path lifts you up into the side of the Fells. A five minute climb reveals this disused Quarry. This was far enough for me on this visit and as I arrived it started throwing it down.

Continuing on my theme and wannabe Quarry project shoots, I focused on the details within the Quarry. here’s what I captured…

This is actually a massive wall, note the ferns growing on the ledges in the left third of the image.

A huge mural of Colour

As luck would have it, the wetter the better for these types of shots as the colours seem to shine.

A red berry in the Rocks.

A drill hole where explosives were packed inside to break the rock in time gone by.

An enjoyable visit to Tilberthwaite Quarry and one I hope to revisit and explore the wider Landscape when energy allows. Its days like this the true extent of Chronic Fatigue makes me realise how debilitating it can be. The frustration can be overwhelming. However looking back on these images almost a year after they were captured and I finally get around to publishing this post I take a lot of positives from my relentless approach to carrying on, it would be all too easy to sit at home inside sulking and watching the world and life slip by, believe me, I spent months like that and it is the worst possible place to be. Even doing al little of what you love has such a positive effect on my life. I am determined to be back to my previous fitness and abilities where I could walk all day up and down some of the largest Lakeland Fells.

You can see more of my Lake District Quarry Shoots here. I’m hoping to visit as many as possible over the coming years as part of a personal project documenting the Workplaces of Old. I wonder if anyone will ever do a similar project on abandoned call centres in 100 years…
