Autumn on Holme Fell in the Lake District

Holme Fell via Yew Tree Tarn Autumn Landscapes

Last time I was up on Holme Fell I got talking to a guy who’d told me he’d walked up from Yew Tree Tarn, I thought to myself, I’ve not walked that way before. Given my reluctance to endure the boggy ground on my usual visits to Holme Fell I decided to try this route. It may be easier and make this place more appealing…

I’ve had some productive shoots at Yew Tree Tarn before (see below) and Autumn is always a fantastic time to visit.

I parked up on the side of the road and made the short walk past the Tarn and up towards Holme Fell. While steeper than I was prepared for it doesn’t take long before you reach the plateau below the summit. I spent a while exploring this area, here are various images I shot of my preferred subject upon arrival. Which do you prefer?

I wanted to seek out the same viewpoint as my summer shoot here and see how the scene had changed as we are heading into Autumn now. Quote interesting how when the heather changes as does the entire feel of the scene, also I am in much flatter, duller light today which will no doubt contribute. The browns are really appealing to me in these scenes mind. Again I made two variations of this scene. I prefer the image on the right.

It was becoming increasingly obvious that the light wasn’t going to bless the landscape this afternoon so I decided to head down back to Yew Tree Tarn to capture the afternoon light on this wonderful Tarn. Yew Tree Tarn is pretty sheltered from the late afternoon light given its position in relation to Holme Fell.

Here are a selection of various crops of the same scene, which one do you prefer? Im quite drawn to the square image, although the panoramic is equally as appealing to me. Click on the images to see a larger version of each image.

Again, the scene above is composed differently three times to give a different look, Again, I prefer the square image, however the image on the right is strong to me too. It’s very subjective.

Finally, here is a wider Panoramic image of the wider scene.
