Eskdale and Wastewater Autumn Visit

All year I’ve been wanting to visit Wastwater for a relaxed day of Landscape Photography. That day was unfortunately not today. Today I was a bit rushed, a bit flustered and it spoilt my shoot. However, after slowing myself down, taking a moment to compose myself I rescued the shoot, albeit after the sun had set. Either way I was grateful for today. I’ve attached a vlog I made of todays shoot as well as some of my favourite images from Eskdale and Wastwater.

River Esk Early Autumn Shoot

Following on from my previous post I made a short drive down the Eskdale valley to this wonderful little location on the River Esk. It’s a place I’ve visited a few times before and always come away feeling I’ve made images that really appeal to me. It’s a wonderful stretch of water with interesting rock formations, with the water being so clear images have a real depth to them. Of course, the trees here really add to the scene, especially in autumn and even more so when the sun sets behind them. Anyone would think I’ve planned to be here at this time of year and this time of day…

I filmed a vlog from this shoot but as with my Eskdale Valley shoot I have decided not to publish the vlog. Or maybe I will in due course. That’s another subject, the thought process behind what we do and don’t publish.

Eskdale Valley Landscape Photography

It seems like a very long time since I last visited the Eskdale Valley with my camera. For more years than I care to remember I have promised myself a day out here with plenty of time to explore and build on my local knowledge of the area.

Today was the perfect day to be out for a Walk in the Lake District. Great, calm weather, lovely in the sun and easy going. Perfect.

I made my way over the Wrynose and Hardknott passes from Ambleside eventually parking up by the cattle grid at the foot of the Hardknott pass, from there its a level walk along the bottom of the Eskdale Valley. I didn’t plan on ascending up the high fells at the head of the valley, namely Bowfell and Crinkle Crags, my destination was this wonderful little bride over Lingcove Beck. Lingcove Bridge is an ancient bridge at the foot of Lingcoe Beck below Bowfell, just above the popular wild swimming pool of Tongue Pot.

I made various images on my walk into the valley on my iPhone which I’ll feature below.

As with a lot of my Landscape Photography shoots, I try and time them so I am in the right place at the right time, weather wise I feel its important to capture the most inspiring weather of the day, early or late low light. This week has been perfect blue sky days here in the Lake District which makes the light just too harsh for my tastes. Upon my arrival at my destination today however it was a race against time as the sun set behind the surrounding fells creating a huge line of shadow across the Landscape in front of me. I worked fast to capture the best/last of the days light as it fell not eh bridge and surrounding areas.

I made a video of this shoot in the style of my recent posts on my YouTube channel however in hindsight I’m going to chose not to share it as it is simply 20 odd minutes of me shooting and not talking, these are in fact my favourite videos but they aren’t at all popular on YouTube.

I thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon in Eskdale Valley, my first, but certainly not my last visit.

If I were to chose my favourite stretch of river or in fact flowing water in the Lake District it would be here in Eskdale. I love it here.

Eskdale Bridge Shoot

A few years back I stumbled across this location in the beautiful Eskdale Valley and after a couple of visits I managed to capture what I believe to this day is one of my most interesting Autumn Landscape Photographs from the Lake District.

Here’s what I managed to capture this time around…

Pink Granite…

The River Esk is a beautiful stretch of water in the Eskdale Valley.

A brief patch of Sunlight illuminates the bank of the Esk through the thick layer of trees that line the river here.

Eskdale Pool Print

Eskdale is one of my favourite locations in the Lake District and in Autumn 2012 I made some of my very favourite Autumnal Lake District images there. This particular shot called Eskdale Pool is one of my personal favourites. I love the Autumnal colours and the Crystal Clear waters of the River Esk. A small pool in the river caught my eye and I had to include it in the frame. A long exposure adds a slight blur to the gentle flowing water and adds subtlety to the scene. If you look carefully you can see my Children on the bank of the river to the left of the water.

I was pleased to print this huge 70cm square print and frame it in Oak. Here is the image shown with one of my business cards for scale.

I’ve produced this short video looking deeper into the image.
