Early Autumn Landscape Photography in the Borrowdale Valley

Autumn is fast approaching and I’m keen to make this year one to remember. After the restrictions of Covid-19 and my desire to put together a new collection of images for Capture Lakeland Volume 3, I’m keen to embrace as much of Autumn as I can this year.

For a while now I’ve wanted to revisit the River Derwent as it meanders through the Borrowdale Valley heading towards Derwentwater to the North. There is an abundance of Oak trees that line the Rivers edge here and from the roadside at least it looks well worth an explore.

Not too long ago I visited the stretch just north of here from the National Trust Car Park at Rosthwaite. You can see those photos here.

I’ve made images from around this area previously but not from the Riverside. This afternoon I wanted to explore this area a bit more and build up my local knowledge of this area a little better. Here’s how I got on…

Quite often when I’m out shooting images I make a variety of versions of the same scene. I find it quite helpful to me to capture the scene and then recompose it using different aspect ratios. For example these 3 images below all have a different feel and look but they are of the exact same scene, made at the same time. Which is your favourite?

As I wandered further along the River I made another series of images of the same scene, I find this really helpful to give me choices later but also to experiment while out in the field.

As the Path leaves the river side I made my way up into the Woodland to seek our Dalt Quarry. Its a wonderful place to shoot at Autumn and always worth a visit. You can see my previous shoot from Dalt Quarry back in 2014 here. I cant believe that is 6 years ago, where does time go.

The Quarry has a distinctive yellow streak running down one side which contrasts perfectly with the Borrowdale Slate.

I decided to make my way up the side fo the Quarry and retake an image I first made in 2014 which I feel will make a really timeless Landscape Photography Print.

Again, I made a few variations…

That will do me for today, maybe a little early for the best of the Autumn colours here in the beautiful Borrowdale Valley, but certainly a location to return to in the coming weeks.

Thanks for visiting, you can see my current collection of Lake District Landscape Photography Prints from The Borrowdale Valley here in my Gallery. Also, all the prints you see here in my Blog are also available as Gallery quality framed prints or as Contemporary Aluminium Prints or a more the more traditional Stretched Canvas Print.
