Glencoe Landscape Photography visit New Year 2020

James — Tue, 07 Jan 2020 11:16:57 +0000

Every winter, especially around Christmas and New Year I pine for a trip to Scotland. Last year I saw in the New Year on the Isle of Skye whilst this year I made it to Glencoe for a few nights. Glencoe is a place I have passed through on my way up or down through Scotland and whilst I’ve made many images from here over the years they have been quick shots, made while the kids wait in the car as I’m heading elsewhere. On this occasion I wanted to give Glencoe more time and spend as much time as I could exploring this wonderful part of Scotland.

While Winter can be a great time of year for us Landscape Photographers it also comes with risks and those risks are the weather. There is no better way to describe the weather I experienced on Glencoe over the 4 days I were there as challenging. Challenging because of gale force winds and sideways rain. In the whole time I was there I saw the sun once for a few moment that I managed to capture on a vlog. It was really a testing time, however I do always say that us photographers have to adapt to the conditions and work with what we are presented with.

Having had a long break from taking images I quickly became aware that I was out of practise and my technique was somewhat lacking behind the camera. I quickly got back into the swing of things and with such inspiring Landscapes who wouldn’t, despite the driving rain and high winds I had a great time. It was liberating to be out and to have a little more time than usual to explore this wonderful place. Certainly a location to keep coming back too.

My current range of Landscape Photography Prints from Glencoe are available here on my website.

Cornwall Fistral Beach Photography

So far, I’m loving my time in Cornwall. It’s really good to explore a new place and especially one with a completely different landscape to that of which I am used too. I love the coast, especially this coast, I have barely scratched the surface but what I have seen so far I have really connected with. The weather these last few days has been surprisingly warm for February to which no doubt helps. Landscape Photography or is it Seascape Photography in Cornwall has got me hooked.

Other than my visit to Wheel Coates the other day I’ve not used my Landscape Photography camera much this trip. Preferring my Lecia M-D and shooting snapshots. Tonight however I was determined to capture the last of the days light over this stretch of Coastline from Fistral to Little Fistral Beach with Towan Head in the distance. Turns out I chose the best night of my stay for this and I was totally lost in these moments capturing these images. It really is a true joy to be fully immersed in the Landscape.

All of the Landscape Photographs from around Fistral Beach in Cornwall are available as Archival Framed Prints. Please contact me for details…

Cornwall Trip – Newquay Surf and Towan Head

James — Thu, 21 Feb 2019 13:37:33 +0000

In only a very short time I seem to have really connected with Cornwall and in-particular this stunning coastline. Its like nothing I’ve witnessed before. Huge crashing waves, beautiful green water and inspiring geological features make for so many scenes I feel inspired to capture.

Todays plan was to head to the Eden Project but before then I took a short walk along the coast to Town Head. Fortunately I timed my walk well with the tide as there were a group of surfers out on the water riding these amazing waves. Had I of come here 20 years earlier I’d have tried surfing.

On to the Eden Project…

Cornwall Trip – St Michael’s Mount

James — Thu, 21 Feb 2019 13:24:34 +0000

Today I visited St Michael’s Mount on the Southern Coast of Cornwall at Marazion. Today wasn’t about Landscape Photography. I was a tourist and a happy one at that. I don’t recall having such an interesting day out in years. I was absolutely fascinated by St Michael’s Mount. So much so I bought the guide book after having a tour of the Islands buildings.

I walked over the the Island and via the causeway and made my way up to the Castle. It was a glorious day and one I shall remember forever. I was intrigued by the castle and its content. The Church at the top and the spectacular views form the roof. A really great day and well worth the National Trust Membership fee alone.

I enjoyed detailed chats with staff inside the Castle and the guy on the boat that took me back to the mainland. A really inspiring place for anyone not just us Landscape Photographers.

All the images featured on my blog are available as Archival Quality framed print. Contact me for details….

Cornwall Trip – Wheel Coates

James — Wed, 20 Feb 2019 23:26:36 +0000

Visiting a new place for Landscape Photography is always an exciting prospect. I think for myself because I am so well connected to the Lake District I don’t really aspire to look elsewhere, neither do I often connect with a place as much as I do the Lakes or Scotland so for the last few years I’ve rarely visited anywhere new. However, I was excited about this trip, which is rare for me. Perhaps my feelings were due to exploring somewhere new or just at the prospect of getting out with my camera again; it feels like ages since I setup and composed an image.

I made an effort tonight to visit Wheel Coates, an old Tin Mine on this wonderful coast. Having not been here before I was keen to see what I could make of this place. It was quite apparent upon arrival that I was too late, or as is usually the case, the last of the light is hidden by cloud. I really must make more of an effort to get into location in plenty of time as this keeps happening.

In total I was here at Wheel Coates for no longer than 10 minutes and here are my favourite photographs of this wonderful setting on the West Cornish Coast.

Cornwall Trip – Towan Head and Newquay

James — Wed, 20 Feb 2019 11:19:32 +0000

My first day in Newquay and so far so good, the weather is surprisingly warm for February and it’s dry. I’ve wanted to visit Cornwall for so long. 10 years intact since my first visit in 2009. Back then I had a flying visit to St Michael’s Mount and Lands End from a weeks stay in Devon. I’m hoping to see as much of this beautiful pace as possible on my short break this week.

For this morning I’m heading out for a short walk around the hotel. To Towan Head and into Newquay itself.
