Grasmere & Rydal

Sunny Summit

This is the summit of Loughrigg Fell. I have had many visitors to the web site and the gallery ask where this is. In the distance you can see Dunmail Raise, Helm Crag to the left and Grasmere below. On this occasion I was treated to a mixed scene. Bright Spring sunshine on one half of the scene and threatening clouds on the other. I think the contrast between the moody shies and hope of the sun coming through makes for an interesting scene. In Wainwright’s Central Fells book 3, he describes three summits to Loughrigg Fell. The one pictured here is the central summit with the Ordnance Survey triangulation column clearly in view. The southern summit has a different perspective and gives you views down into Langdale, over Elterwater you also get a glimpse of the Industrial side of the Lake District with old mine works clearly visible on the side of Lingmoor Fell, a rear glimpse of Loughrigg Tarn is also seen. You can see a 360 version of the southern Summit here and a view from Loughrigg Tarn here.
